After an official groundbreaking in September 2010, construction of the new Caterpillar Visitors Center on the Peoria Riverfront is now underway. The Center will feature interactive galleries and theaters that celebrate Caterpillar's heritage while keeping an eye on the future and a focus on customers and sustainability.
As visitors enter the Center, they will settle into a theater seat in the bed of a life-size 797 Mining Truck. There they will learn about the people of Caterpillar and the sustainable progress Caterpillar® customers make possible all over the world, every day.
Next, they can stroll through the Heritage Gallery to inspect a Model Twenty track-type tractor, see how customer needs drive change in the Product Development gallery, learn about how those new products are produced in the Safety and Manufacturing gallery and understand the values and culture behind the products and people of Caterpillar.
Other exhibits include an Engine Gallery, highlighting customer applications of Caterpillar power all over the world; the Working as One dealer and customer gallery; and the Caterpillar at Work Around the World gallery, showcasing Cat® equipment and how it is used on customer job sites. Visitors will also get a glimpse of what's next on the horizon as Caterpillar looks ahead to meet future customer needs.
The new facility will also house a Cat Merchandise Centre and will be home to the Caterpillar Visitor Services team.
Throughout the Visitors Center, guests will see first-hand Caterpillar's focus on sustainability. Features may include things like capturing roof rainwater for irrigation, using more native, natural vegetation in the Center's landscape, utilizing solar panels and a combined heat and power system - all supporting our journey to achieve LEED® Gold certification.
Caterpillar is working with River City Construction of East Peoria, Ill., to build the 50,000-square-foot building and is on track to open in October 2012.
