Thousands of San Antonio families got a head start on the new school year earlier this month at the fifth annual SS&E Back to School Bash. Spurs Sports & Entertainment hosted the free community event on Saturday, Aug. 8 at Frost Bank Center, welcoming more than 7,000 community members through the doors.

The Bash ran from noon to 3 p.m. and was open to parents, students and teachers connected to grades K-12. Admission was free with advance registration, and supplies and services were distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while they lasted.

Families walked away with backpacks and classroom supplies, and health services were offered on site as well, including dental, heart and glucose screenings. Free haircuts were also available so students could show up to the first day looking sharp.

Beyond supplies, the event connected families with information booths covering school enrollment, extracurricular programs, mental health support and family support services. Those resources came together through partnerships with local businesses, nonprofits, community organizations and area school districts.

There was plenty of fun mixed in too. Students and their families met Spurs players, said hello to the Coyote and lined up for free photos with the franchise’s five championship trophies.

Patricia Mejia, Chief Impact & Inclusion Officer at SS&E, framed the mission simply: every student deserves to start the school year holding the tools and the confidence they need to do well.
