About HOLT CAT: Corporate Sustainability Mission Goals

Environmental Philosophy

HOLT provides solutions that protect people, preserve the planet, and enable economic growth. We are providing work environments, products, and services that make efficient use of the world's natural and sustainable resources and reduce unnecessary effects on people and the environment, while integrating sustainability into our core businesses and helping our customers do the same.

We are leveraging resources to:

  • Promote and protect individual safety and well-being;
  • Provide employment, education and training;
  • Minimize the use of energy, materials, water and land;
  • Maximize recycling;
  • Minimize emissions; and
  • Optimize the use of renewable resources.
Projects

Renewable Energy
HOLT facilities maximize use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency measures where practicable.

HOLT installed 7,264 solar modules at 12 locations for an annual energy production of 3,125,520 kWh. This is an offset of approximately 2,215 metric tons of carbon emissions, or the equivalent of saving greenhouse gas emissions from 477 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year.

HOLT Renewables, a turnkey engineering, procurement and construction firm, continues to support additional efforts to achieve greater sustainability and energy independence for Holt Companies. HOLT Renewables, which was acquired by HOLT in 2019, works nationwide to support commercial and industrial clients to take renewable projects from concept to execution.

Energy Efficient Construction and Infrastructure Investment
HOLT constructed and maintains LEED-certified buildings in Little Elm, Sulphur Springs, Edinburg, Laredo, and San Antonio. In more recent years we have moved toward taking a more holistic approach to sustainable construction. Industry standards drive some of this during construction and in addition to utilizing LED lighting, we include other functions such as occupancy sensors to shut lights off during periods of non-use, Automatic Controls to establish schedules for both lighting and HVAC usage, high velocity low speed fans to assist cooling shops and warehouses, solar systems, closed loop wash racks to recycle water, cisterns to capture and repurpose rain water in our irrigation systems, detention ponds to slow the diversion of water as it sheets off our fields and yards to prevent downstream flooding and erosion, shades and window tinting, high-efficiency windows and remote irrigation controls to monitor, control water usage via a desktop app and we utilize native plants at our various locations across the state to limit water consumption in maintaining our landscapes.

HOLT manages over 55,000 acres of open wildlife preserve areas, including a half  acre butterfly garden on our San Antonio headquarters campus. Holt Companies employ two full-time land managers, a Facility Management team of 19, an Environmental Specialist, and supporting staff.

Reduce/Reuse/Recycle
We continually seek, develop and implement new programs to further reduce our environmental footprint.

  • In all locations HOLT’s aggressive recycling programs for paper, plastic, metal, and cardboard also include water, batteries, oils, solvents, and other fluids. Safety-Kleen, one of our waste disposal companies, certified that through recycling HOLT avoided 4,580 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2021. In one year, waste diverted and recycled (tons/year) includes:
    • 2,015 tons of waste oil
    • 133 tons of anti-freeze
    • 428 tons of oil filters recovered from repaired trucks, equipment, and engines
    • 75 tons of solvents
  • HOLT’s wash racks clean and recycle water to eliminate the need to continually use fresh water to clean equipment. These reduce the water utilized by approximately 5,038,848 gallons annually.
  • LED lights are utilized exclusively in new construction in older facilities, we are replacing fixtures with LED lights to reduce energy consumption, provide higher quality of light, and a longer lasting fixture. In addition to energy-efficient lighting, all facilities use occupancy sensors, dimmer switches, natural lighting, blinds and window tinting to control excessive lighting. By upgrading across Texas HOLT has reduced electricity use by 2.8 million kWh, reducing future power plant emissions by 5.1 million pounds of CO2, 17 thousand pounds of SO2, eight thousand pounds of NOx and 122 grams of Mercury annually. This is equivalent to planting 821 acres of trees or removing 467 cars from the road each year.
  • Low-flow toilets and sink and toilet water sensors further conserve water.
  • In our new construction, we have desk recycling and centralized plant trash areas. Trash generated in an office setting is primarily recyclable, consisting of paper, cardboard, metal, and plastic. The waste generated by employees bringing in external items is the bulk of the waste and is collected in centralize trash areas. This recycling effort has resulted in the elimination of over 200 tons of materials.
  • New buildings have water bottle filling stations and paper coffee cups at our coffee stations, eliminating Styrofoam and plastic.
  • Our shredding company carted off an additional 60 tons of shredded and recycled confidential wastepaper.
  • We use polished concrete whenever possible to eliminate additional flooring materials. Other construction materials such as carpet tiles, vinyl flooring and ceiling tiles are made with post-consumer recycled products. We use high efficiency HVAC systems whenever possible.
  • Voluntary no-idle areas at all facilities.
