Desma Norris is a leader, a mentor, and a trailblazer in the construction industry.
For Desma Norris, working with machinery was a passion from an early age. Growing up, she and her brothers spent hours taking things apart and putting them back together, fascinated by how they worked. She started with cars, helping her brother with his vehicles before eventually working on her own. But even then, she had her sights set on something bigger—construction equipment. Now, after 21 years in the industry and a decade at HOLT CAT, Desma has not only built a career in heavy equipment service but has also become a leader in the field as a Service Manager.
One of the things Desma values most about working at HOLT CAT is the opportunity for growth and mentorship. "I have been given the opportunity to advance in my career and share my knowledge with others," she says. Her journey has been shaped by strong mentors, including her mother and brothers, who supported her through tough situations, and her husband, who has been by her side every step of the way. Within HOLT CAT, Craig Johnson encouraged her to apply for the Field Supervisor role, while Lawrence Prince helped her understand financials and supported her move into the Service Manager position. Now, Henry Jones is mentoring her to refine her leadership skills, proving that growth never stops.
While women are making strides in the industry, misconceptions still exist. One of the biggest myths Desma hopes to break is the belief that women lack the physical strength or technical skills needed for construction. “This stereotype undermines the diverse capabilities and contributions that women bring to the field,” she says. From hands-on work with heavy machinery to leading service teams, women continue to prove that skill, knowledge, and work ethic define success.
For those looking to thrive in the construction industry, Desma believes it comes down to a few key qualities:
- A basic understanding of the industry
- A willingness to learn
- Standing up for yourself
- A strong work ethic and integrity
For Desma, Women in Construction Week is more than just a celebration. “To me, Women in Construction means breaking stereotypes,” she explains. Her advice to the next generation? “If this is something you truly enjoy, pursue it wholeheartedly and don’t let anyone stand in your way.”
Desma Norris is a leader, a mentor, and a trailblazer in the construction industry. From turning wrenches to leading service teams, she continues to inspire others to chase their passion, push past barriers, and build the future of construction—one machine at a time.
